Earthsound is a new multi-media ensemble that features a unique mix of world music and original jazz.
For this show, we'll mix in a few arrangements of traditional Armenian pieces. Reflecting my interest in
the natural world and environmental issues, Earthsound also performs improvised music along with
natural sounds recorded in locales such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest of Costa Rica. I'll be playing
bass and will be joined by an all-star group of musicians: Brazilian flautist Fernando Brandao, Israeli
pianist Gilad Barkan, and Peruvian percussionist Jorge Perez-Albela. Earthsound has been nominated in
the Boston Phoenix Best Music Poll and has been featured in a recent Boston Globe article.

Sérgio Brandão @ Regattabar
Eclectic Brazilian jazz instrumentalist and composer Sérgio Brandão and his large ensemble Manga-
Rosa have been in the core of the Boston music scene for years, with an original and exciting sound of
‘rich transparent harmonic textures… great resource for improvisation’ — as pointed Jon Garelick on a
May 2007 review for The Boston Phoenix. These ‘impressionistic’ textures are the result of the extensive
usage of one (or two!) flutes in combination with flugel horn and sax soprano. This atmosphere hits the
ground with guitar, piano, bass and percussion. That’s Manga-Rosa! .... // Sergio was born in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, and resides in Boston, MA since 1979. He is a world class artist that paints using brush
strokes of Brazilian music in a welcoming fusion with the genres of jazz, world and classical music,
combined with the uplifting, creative energy drawn from his holistic way of living, natural foods, travel,
photography, anthropology, and yoga. .... // When the production allows, in the background next to the
music you might see Sergio’s photography, with slide shows of flowers, birds, people, and Brazil’s
evoking landscapes. .... // "Blending the virtuosity of modern Jazz with his musical roots of Brasil,
composer Brandao weaves sophisticated forms and textures into a vibrant, simple fabric of folk
traditions. With his nine piece ensemble, Manga-Rosa, Brandão has orchestrated a paean to his
homelands rhythmic diversity and spiritual fire." — Catherine A. Salmons, Boston Phoenix writer, 1996.

Between the crispness of Brazilian and world grooves, Manga Rosa swings and kicks fresh with an edge, merging the folk roots of maracatu, baião, samba and choro, with jazz and beyond.
Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, a graduate from New England Conservatory, composer guitarist Sergio Brandão, and his octet Manga Rosa, have been at the heart of the Boston music scene for the past two decades. From conception, the unique instrumentation, including two flautists next to the traditional trumpet-sax jazz set, brands itself a unique sound for a music that clearly blends genuine Brazilian roots with Jazz, with a few world spices, and Impressionistic overtones of classical European tradition. All original arrangements. Compositions by Maria Rita, A.C. Jobim, and Sergio Brandão.
The nonet features world class musicians originally from Brazil, USA, Israel and Argentina.

The critics celebrate Beth Bruno as one of the great voices of Brazil’s new generation of musical artists. Marked by a sensual sweetness, her voice and personality enamor her to fellow musicians and captivate her audiences everywhere. A native of Brazil, Beth began her career in Rio de Janeiro, performing at MPB Festivals where she won numerous awards for best performance and interpretation. She has performed in Brazil with legends as Milton Nascimento, Djavan, Gilberto Gil, Ivan Lins, Roberto Carlos, and with the finest musicians known throughout the country. Beth’s talents came to the attention of U.S. artists, Al Jarreau and Marcus Miller, who enlisted her to perform with them at Brazil’s Free Jazz Festival. In the legitimate theatre, along with composer Carlos Lyra and actor Antônio Pedro, Beth displayed her acting talents as lead in the musical comedy Pobre Menina Rica by Vinícius de Moraes and Carlos Lyra. Beth’s singing has been featured in film soundtracks that have been recognized and awarded nationally and abroad at the Cannes Film Festival in France.
